Programs will begin at the main parking lot just past the gate. All events are free and family friendly. Allow approx. 2 hours.
March 21 - The Big Trek. Hike with our guide from the North Fork of Paint Creek at Slate Mills to Paint Creek in the Gorge wholly within preserves boundaries. This rugged approximately 4 mile hike will be difficult with steep inclines, not for the faint of heart nor weak of limb. Pack water and lunch. Allow app. 5 hrs. 9 am Meet at the main gate to carpool.
April 11 – Amphibian Alert. Explore the lives and natural histories of our salamanders and frogs. We may even find a few reptiles as we hike from Hoggard Trail to Patterson farm. 1 pm
April 16, 17, 19 - The Annual Southern Ohio Wildflower Pilgrimage. Join us in celebrating the return of the wildflowers in the five-county Arc of Appalachia Preserve Region of southern Ohio. Up to three days of field trips led by some of Ohio’s finest naturalists and botanists. Choose among dozens of nature preserves and botanical hotspots in the rich Arc of Appalachia Region of Southern Ohio. Registration form online at www.highlandssanctuary.org/
May 9 - Green Workshop. “Looking for ways to Green up your lifestyle?” This workshop will teach the basics of composting, vermicomposting, and give information on local recycling opportunities, environmentally friendly cleaning products and household hazardous waste disposal. Adult oriented. 9am to 11 am.
May 16 - Botany Basics. This walk will begin with a background on plant identification and a discussion of threats to wildflower areas. Then we’ll hit the trail to see what we can find and identify! 1pm
June 13 – History Walk. Take a walk back in time with our local historian and hear how Buzzard's Roost was once farmed and is now forgotten. Visit the Hoggard home site and cemetery (and beyond) as you follow the old township road to learn the cultural history of the what is now the preserve. 1 pm
June 27 - Children's Discovery Day . Furs, Jaws, Feathers and Claws. This “hands on” discovery day introduces children to some “rip-roaring” facts about some of Ohio’s wild animals who live at the Buzzards Roost. 9 am to 11 am
July 11 – Insect Adventures. Explore the fields and trails for insects and spiders and discover all about life as a “bug”. Nets will be provided. This program is for ALL ages! 10 am
August 22-Creatures of the Night - Beginning in mid-summer, a symphony of sound starts playing in our woodlands. The music reaches a crescendo by mid-August, and most people are familiar with the music – they just don’t know the names of the musicians! We’ll stroll around Buzzards Roost in the dark, and put names to the various coneheads, katydids, anglewings, crickets and other insects that create the pleasing sounds of summer. With luck, a flying squirrel or perhaps some owls will be spotted. Led by Jim McCormac. 7:30 pm
Jim McCormac works for the Ohio Division of Wildlife and is author of Birds of Ohio. His newest book, “Wild Ohio: The Best of Our Natural Heritage”, highlights 40 of the greatest wild lands remaining in the state, and Buzzard Roost is one of them.
October 4 - Photography Safari. Let’s have a fun romp at the Roost snapping pictures all the way. Bring your digital camera and plenty of battery power so we can “Chimp. ” To “Chimp” is to share our digital captures. This will inspire us to “see” and learn from other participants perspectives. Easy hike from the parking lot to the barn. 2 pm.
October 18 - Fall Foliage Walk Join us for a relaxing stroll through woods and fields to view Southern Ohio’s spectacular fall color. 2 pm.
Oct 23, 30, Nov 6 - Owl Friday Night. Come prowl the dark woods with the “Owl Team” as they call in the small Northern Saw-whet Owl. Cancelled if raining. 7 p.m.
