The Adena Recreational Trail will eventually link Chillicothe
to Washington Court House almost entirely on the abandoned
B&O Railroad corridor. When complete the Adena Trail will
be more than 30 miles in length. From Washington Court House
the trail will continue through Jamestown to Xenia where it
will link with the Ohio to Erie cross state trail. The Ross
County Park District has assumed the role of development after
the land acquisition was implemented by the Tri-County Triangle
Trail organization in 1990.
There are currently slightly less than seven paved miles of
trail that begin near the Maple Grove/Anderson Station/Sulphur
Lick Roads intersection. There is improved parking at the
Hopewell Site owned by the U.S. Department of Interior and
managed by Hopewell Culture National Historical Park.
The first section of the trail travels through the site of
a Hopewell Indian village. The National Park Service is in
the research stage of developing this site. The trail then
travels towards the Village of Frankfort crossing five bridges.
The longest bridge is 366' long crossing the North Fork of
Paint Creek. A 244' bridge has a scenic overlook of North
Fork Creek more than three miles from Frankfort. Opportunities
for watching wildlife, fishing are abundant. Canoe launching
can be done at Frankfort.
The trail is patrolled by Deputies From the Ross County Sheriffs
department. Many others protect the area from ATVs and motorized
vehicle use. Please see the trail use rules.
In 2002 the trail will link Frankfort to the new Adena School
campus. Bridges between Frankfort toward Washington Court
House are being decked and railed preparing for future development.
Trail monitors and volunteers are always needed for the Adena
Recreational Trail. Trees blow over, weeds grow and trimming
is always needed. Please help keep the Adena Trail one of
the most beautiful trails in Ohio.
